Diazepam (or similar medications) for claustrophobia associated with medical scanners

We do not prescribe diazepam (or similar medications) for the purpose of managing claustrophobia associated with medical scanning procedures.

The decision is based on:

  • Safety considerations (e.g., need for clinical monitoring, risk of respiratory depression, impairment on driving, contraindications)

  • Potential for dependence/misuse

  • Lack of continuity of monitoring when medication is used off-site (e.g., in a hospital scanner)

  • Guidance from local prescribing committees and best-practice risk management

Please contact the scanning unit to discuss support for claustrophobia.

Thank you for your understanding.
